White Papers

In this section, we would like to provide access to white papers that will help the reader understand various aspects about 3DPDF and the PDF platform. Registration is not required for most white papers, but is for some, and in these cases it will be highlighted.

Positioning 3DPDF in Manufacturing

One of the most common questions that a manufacturing executive, manager, or professional has is - what is the role of 3DPDF? What kinds of workflows and use cases is it appropriate for? How does it compare to such standards as JT, or STEP? Are the same thing? Do they serve the same purpose. This white paper, authored by Consortium Executive Director David Opsahl, attempts to address these questions. An executive from one of the largest aerospace companies in the world had this to say about this white paper:

"I was impressed with the clear and concise description of a complex environment.  Let me know when this is releasable to others –there are some people I know that would appreciate receiving it."

Model Based Enterprise - A Technology Enabled Contract Management Approach

This white paper was authored by Mitzi Whittenburg, CPCM who works for UTRS, Inc. a U.S. Department of Defense contractor supporting ARDEC, the US Army research arm, and is used here with permission. Model Based Enterprise (MBE) is an information technology strategy promoted by the Department of Defense, and embraced in many forms by a number of manufacturers inside and outside the aerospace and defense industry. MBE refers to the adoption of full 3D product definition, often called Model Based Design (MBD), and then leveraging that data throughout the lifecycle of a product. This is an excellent paper that can provide insight outside the defense supplier community, but in particular helps to highlight how the Deparment of Defense is changing its procurement practices through a revision to MIL-STD-31000, the specification for how companies provide Technical Data Packages (TDP) to the DOD. Highly recommended.

Visualization vs. Communication: Enabling the Model Based Enterprise

The term "visualization" has been typically used to describe the process of taking the design of a product, a building, or a plant, and "sending" that downstream for others to use in their job role. What we've learned is that an iterative or dynamic "picture"  isn't enough to communicate all of the information needed for most, if not all, job roles. This paper explains how 3DPDF enables the Model Based Enterprise by providing a means to communicate all of the information needed.
